Ulimate Ears, a subsidiary of Logitech, came out with its latest version of the take-it-anywhere Bluetooth speakers, the UE BOOM 2. So how does it compare with the old one?
According to the manufacturer, the UE BOOM 2 is not only designed to "get wet, muddy and beat up" but it plays a bigger purpose in revolutionizing how people experience music.
"By taking your music with you, those great moments are now shareable, anywhere," said Rory Dooley, Ultimate Ears general manager. "We've been leading the category in a new direction, and we're breaking the mold yet again with UE BOOM 2."
The outdoor wireless boom box has an IPX7 waterproof rating, which allows it to be submerged by a meter (approx. 3.3 feet) underwater for 30 minutes. Ultimate Ears also claims that the UE BOOM 2 is shockproof. Of course, there are limitations to everything. The speakers will not be able to withstand a drop higher than five feet.
The BOOM 2 is built using the BOOM's 360-degree speaker technology, which blasts sound off to every direction. The same 15-hour battery pack was ported from the BOOM to the BOOM 2.
However, the similarities end there. The current release is 25 percent louder than its older brother. The BOOM 2 comes with a 100-feet wireless range. It uses Bluetooth to connect to a mobile device, remotely configure speaker settings, and set up the "Double Up" feature, which allows multiple UE speakers to be used all at once.
BOOM 2 also comes equipped with Ultimate Ear's tap control, allowing songs to be changed simply by tapping, as opposed to taking out the phone, a feature that the BOOM doesn't have.
Moreover, compared to the BOOM, BOOM 2's exterior is tighter courtesy of the closer knits on the weaving, which makes it easily customizable to special edition versions. BOOM had 46 released variants.
UE BOOM 2 sells for $199.99 dollars. Buyers have six color options: Cherrybomb, Phantom, Yeti, Tropical, BrainFreeze and GreenMachine.
