Be careful what you tweet. One New England Patriots fan found that out the hard way.
Mike Tetreault tweeted "10,000 retweets and I'll run on the field" at 9:21 p.m. during the Patriots-Pittsburgh Steelers game Thursday, September 10, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. It didn't take long for him to get a reaction.
Nearly an hour after making the declaration, which Tetreault claims was a joke, he was greeted by NFL security, who escorted him out of the game.
According to Tetreault's Twitter account, he also claims that NFL security told him, "We know everything about you... we know your whole life," in an attempt to intimidate him. Tetreault alleges that the NFL "selectively monitors" fans' Twitter accounts.
While we've seen fans who run across the field get kicked out and even arrested, fans getting tossed from a game for tweeting is sort of unchartered territory. That said, we are in the digital age, where everything posted on social media is seen — and in this case, by the NFL.
Tetreault is demanding an apology from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and has been retweeting messages in support of his cause.
