Attack on Titan has become a worldwide phenomenon. Since the manga series debuted six years ago, it has gone on to spawn a popular anime, two live-action movies, multiple spin-off series and even a few video games.
Expect the manga's popularity to last up until the very end — which will be coming in about three years. That's how long the manga will continue before the creators reach the end of the story, says Attack on Titan editor Kawakubo Shintaro in a new interview (via Crunchy Roll).
That means three more years of intense human vs. Titan action for fans to enjoy. Even if the manga series has an end in sight, the anime adaptation of Attack on Titan still has a ways to go. Season 1 of the anime debuted in 2013 to great success, helping usher in the creation of the live-action films. That said, after more than two years, we still don't have Season 2 of the show — which is supposedly coming sometime in 2016.
Shintaro also elaborated on the creation of the series. He says the suggestion was originally for Attack on Titan author Hajime Isayama to create a new majority-geared series, which would be "easy for the public to understand and caters to them." Isayama supposedly then asked who represents this so-called "majority." The two men went back and forth on the subject for about a year until Attack on Titan was eventually born.
If you've read the manga or watched the anime, you'll know that it definitely doesn't cater to its audience. Perhaps that is why the series is so wildly popular. With its dark tone and willingness to kill off characters left and right, Attack on Titan feels dangerous and risky in a way few other action-oriented manga series are.
You can check out the latest trailer for the live action Attack on Titan here, but be warned that if you have yet to watch the show or read the manga, it may spoil some of the fun. An Attack on Titan game is also in the works for PlayStation 4, coming from none other than the creators of the long-running Dynasty Warriors franchise.
