At Sony's press conference at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2014, the company announced that Grand Theft Auto V will be released for the PlayStation 4 this fall.
Releases of the game for the PC and XBox One will follow soon after.
According to Sony, Grand Theft Auto V "takes full advantage of the power of PS4," featuring improvements and new details for players to find out.
One important feature for PlayStation 4 users who will be playing Grand Theft Auto V is that they will be able to transfer their games and characters from Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to the PlayStation 4. This will allow players to continue from where they left off using Grand Theft Auto Online, which is the online multiplayer mode of the game that allows up to 16 players at once to engage in cooperative or competitive missions.
Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto V for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September last year, selling over 33 million copies since then. Grand Theft Auto V broke sales records in the video game industry to become the fastest-selling entertainment product ever, raking in $800 million on its first day of release and $1 billion over its first three days. It has since won several Game of the Year awards.
Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world video game that takes place in the fictional location named San Andreas. The single-player mode follows the exploits of three criminals as they commit heists, with players allowed to freely roam around the city. Most of the missions involve driving and shooting gameplay, with crimes increasing the "wanted" level for the character, which measure show aggressive law enforcers will be towards subduing the character.
In October last year, Sony's Grand Theft Auto V 500GB PlayStation 3 Super Slim bundle broke Microsoft's 32-month long streak for the best-selling gaming console in the U.S. According to NPD Group analst Liam Callahan, Grand Theft Auto V was a "much needed shot in the arm for the industry."
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a PlayStation 2 version of the series which was first released in October 2004, was also ported to the Windows Phone early this year. The game is now available at the WIndows Phone Store for $6.99, with a size of about 19MB upon downloading and an additional 2.5GB required to download before the game can be played. Supported Windows Phone devices include the HTC 8XT and several Nokia Lumia phones.
