E3 2014: Microsoft announced Phantom Dust reboot: Everything you need to know

Microsoft dropped another bombshell at its E3 2014 press conference in the form of Phantom Dust. Many gamers have no idea what this game is about, and who can blame them? The original version was released back in 2005 for the first Xbox, and since then Microsoft had abandoned the project altogether.

Well, Phantom Dust is returning in the form of a reboot for the Xbox One. The CGI trailer only showed two individuals; a male and a female going at it with the aim to kill each other, but apart from that, we are not sure of where Microsoft is going with the new title.

What we know of the first Phantom Dust.

The first Phantom Dust was a brilliant video game that transformed into a cult classic. The game was set in an apocalyptic world where humans live underground. This is because a mysterious dust dwells on the surface that is capable of doing weird things to people who come in contact with it. In addition, all humans left on the planet seems to suffer from amnesia, why is this? We won't say.

Now, only special folks can travel on the service. These folks are called Espers, and they have the ability to manipulate the weird dust to create skills and other variety of powers.

What made Phantom Dust unique?

Simply put, its gameplay. After viewing the trailer, players might believe Phantom Dust is some type of action game that is similar to the likes of inFamous or Final Fantasy. However, that is not the case. The gameplay is centered on playing cards and strategy. Players build their deck of cards with certain powers and run around kicking ass wherever possible.

The CGI video showed nothing of the card and strategic combat, so we have no idea if the team behind Phantom Dust will use the classic gameplay style and improve upon it for the new game. We hope the team does this because the gameplay was the most unique aspect of the first Phantom Dust, and it would be a real shame if it were removed.

When should Xbox One gamers expect to play Phantom Dust?

No idea, but we are putting this down for another 2016 release since the CGI trailer was so short and lacking in detail. It gave us the impression that development has only begun recently.
