All time high: 3.2 million people in Britain diagnosed with diabetes

Around 3.2 million people in the UK are diagnosed with diabetes out of which 90 percent of them have type 2 diabetes that causes obesity.

Latest reports suggest that more than 4 million people in the UK are suffering from the deadly disease and 850,000 people are unaware that they have diabetes.

UK's healthcare service, National Health Service (NHS), warns that it is very important for the country to understand and tackle the situation before it worsens.

The country's Department of Health says that in 2012 around 7.3 percent of the total population was affected by diabetes. However, the department estimates that the percentage will jump to 8.8 percent by 2030.

The NHS is already on its heels to address the seriousness of diabetes. The NHS Health Check system invites adults, who are aged between 40 and 74 in England, to get a health assessment. The program aims to find people who are at a high risk of medical conditions such as diabetes or heart diseases. Medical experts suggest that if people get an early medical check-up then they can also get early treatment to avoid any complications.

"With type 2 diabetes becoming more common, the NHS Health Check presents an opportunity for individuals to take steps earlier, such as weight control, to prevent or even reverse diabetes in its early stages," says Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England. "It is important that those eligible take up the offer of an NHS Health Check so their risk of serious, but potentially avoidable conditions, can be assessed, leading to early intervention."

Barbara Young, the chief executive of Diabetes UK says that there are around 630,000 people in the UK who have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Young claims that as soon as health agencies are able to identify them, they can start receiving healthcare so that their condition can be managed.

The NHS is trying to help people to fight diabetes and has also set up an interactive guide that provides details of what happens when a person visits for the NHS Health Check, how to get an assessment and information on how to reduce the risks of disease such as diabetes.

Many people are currently not taking advantage of the service and health advocates in the UK are urging people to take advantage of the service.
