CBS has announced that it will stream two regular-season NFL games online for free for the first time. The October 4 matchup between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins live from London (at 9:30 a.m. EST) and the Carolina Panthers vs. Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day clash will be the two games streamed.
The games can be watched for free via laptops, desktops, tablets, the XBox One, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku players, in addition to CBSSports.com. CBS will also stream four playoff games and Super Bowl 50 on its website, as well as for other devices, reportedly including Xbox One, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku players.
The news comes after Yahoo already paid $20 million for the rights to stream a regular-season game between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, also from London on October 25. While the Jets vs. Dolphins matchup is from London's Wembley Stadium as well, it's definitely a coup for CBS to land a Thanksgiving game involving the Cowboys, America's team.
CBS and Yahoo are actually following in the path of Fox Sports, which streamed a whopping 101 NFL games via its website and tablet app last season, but required users to pay to see those matchups. CBS and Yahoo's respective streamed games are free.
This could be the start of the floodgates being split wide open for the prospects of more NFL games being streamed for free online in the future.
