When it comes down to it, there are really only two different types of mashups: those that make sense, and those that don't.
Something like Super Smash Bros. makes sense — while it's true that the games are built on the backs of numerous different franchises, having all of Nintendo's lovable mascots in the same spot just feels right. By contrast, a mashup between Nintendo's lovable Pokemon franchise and something like Grand Theft Auto doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. After all, Rockstar's open-world crime simulator is anything but family-friendly, while Pokemon is basically the definition of harmless fun.
They're pretty much complete opposites... that said, though a mashup between the two might not make much sense, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be hilarious.
Case in point: YouTuber Merfish has taken the original 1997 version of the Pokemon anime theme song and recreated the entire thing using Grand Theft Auto V. It's one of the most bizarre mashups to ever hit the Internet — it's also one of the best.
At this point, Merfish is basically a one-man machinima machine: he's the same YouTuber behind the Grand Theft Auto versions of the Full House, the A-Team and the Winnie the Pooh themes. The Pokemon video is just the latest in a growing library — at this point, it's hard to predict which show Merfish will take on next.
Of course, there's always a chance that Merfish will tackle another Nintendo franchise, now that Pokemon is out of the way — who wouldn't want to see the opening of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show with Michael and Trevor as Mario and Luigi?
