This October, old-school Transformers fans are getting what may be the ultimate bit of fan service.
Transformers: Devastation is the latest game to be set in the popular toy franchise's universe. The last few games have tried to hew closer to the Michael Bay films or the comic books in terms of style, but Devastation is a full-on 80s nostalgia trip.
Gamers old enough to remember the original Transformers cartoon series will be delighted to hear that Devastation's manifesto is to emulate the look and feel of that show. Optimus Prime is a flat-fronted, Kenworth cab-forward hauler. Bumblebee is a VW Bug. Soundwave is a cassette tape player. Megatron is a pistol. And so on. Most of the original voice actors from the show returned to reprise their roles in the game, as well.
Platinum Games has released a new trailer for Transformers: Devastation that displays the special abilities each character possesses. The main focus of the trailer is placed on Optimus Prime and Grimlock, but the game is said to also let you play as Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Wheeljack.
In addition to the whole "transforming" robots/vehicles mechanic, there are a slew of attack moves, combos and customization options that should give players plenty to do. What you can see of the game world looks pretty sparse, but the character models are spot-on perfect.
Check it out.
We'll see how it turns out when Transformers: Devastation comes to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on October 6, 2015.
