Apple has announced its upcoming version of the OS X operating system, OS X Yosemite, at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2014 in San Francisco. The new operating system is expected to become available this fall.
On Monday, June 2, Apple revealed the OS X Yosemite, which is supposed to be a redesigned and a refined version of the OS X. The new operating system will give its user a modern look, full with new and powerful apps, and a continuity feature.
"Yosemite is the future of OS X with its incredible new design and amazing new apps, all engineered to work beautifully with iOS," says Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "We engineer our platforms, services and devices together, so we are able to create a seamless experience for our users across all our products that is unparalleled in the industry. It's something only Apple can deliver."
Apple announced that the OS X Yosemite includes a new Today view in the Notification Center that gives users a quick glance at everything and in one place. The iCloud Drive is also located in the Finder, which can store any type of files. Safari will also get a new design in the OS X Yosemite with easy accessibility to the most common controls.
The new continuity features in the latest OS X Yosemite gives users a seamless experience on their Macs and iOS devices. When a user has an iPad or an iPhone near a Mac, Handoff lets the user to start an activity on one Apple device then pass it over to another Apple device. SMS and MMS messages previously appeared only on iPhones; however, the Yosemite will display SMS and MMS in Messages in all Apple devices. Moreover, users also have the option to send SMS and MMS directly from the Mac and also receive or make calls with the help of the Mac.
Apple also unveiled that the current OS X has an install base of around 80 million. The company is taking some cues from its iOS operating system and trying to give users a uniform experience on laptops, desktops and mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads.
Apple also confirmed that the developer version of Yosemite will be available from June 2 itself. Mac users can participate in the OS X Beta Program starting this summer, which will allow customers an early access to the upcoming operating system. Registered customers to the OS X Beta Program will be able to try Yosemite and submit their feedback to the company. Customers who are interested in signing up for the OS X Beta Program can visit the OS X preview page and get full details.
