The wearable technology war is about to truly begin as three top companies are announcing their full entrance in the battle for the heads, wrists and bodies of the general population through the launching of new products that aim to capture attention.
Currently, Samsung is at the forefront of the wearable tech industry, having recently announced a new smartwatch that does not need to be linked to a smartphone to function.
But with Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) ready to begin next week, many are looking to the Silicon Valley-based company with optimism that they will be launching new and innovative products that will once again put them at the forefront of the tech world.
And it's not just Apple and Samsung who are expected to do battle over wearable tech, as Microsoft announced it is developing its own smartwatch. The new watch is expected to function on all the big operating systems and should be a continued boost into the smartwatch realm.
But Apple is on everyone's radar at the moment, especially following Senior VP Eddy Cue's comments this is the best product year he has seen at the company in his 25 years.
"Later this year, we've got the best product pipeline that I've seen in my 25 years at Apple," Cue said, in an apparent teaser to what folks are to expect at this year's WWDC.
And it would be prudent for Apple and Microsoft to enter the game, considering Samsung's announcement of their own smartwatch.
The smartwatch will give users the chance to send out emails, use a heart-rate monitor, take photos, all with Bluetooth and GPS capabilities.
"There's still the question of why people really need to buy smart watches today," said Lee Seung-woo, an analyst at IBK Securities in Seoul. "Samsung is estimated to be the dominant vendor of wearables, but it will take quite a bit of time for sales to contribute to the company's earnings," he said, adding that the market for smart watches is weaker than smartphones.
With all the effort going into outdoing and out-maneuvering the competition, the coming months are expected to be one of excitement as each tech company attempts to one-up the other in the war for the wearable tech industry.
