Samsung Proposes Global Internet With Help From Microsatellites

If Samsung gets its way, the Information Superhighway will be the Intergalactic Information Superhighway: the multinational conglomerate has released a research proposal for global satellite-based internet access.

Lab head and current president of Samsung R&D America Farooq Khan penned the paper, which posits the possibility for a extraterrestrial installation of 4,600 low-cost microsatellites, which would switch between or utilize bands better than or equal to those on our planet to deal with large amounts of data.

According to Khan, this Wi-Fi system would be able to generate 200 GB per month for billions of terrestrial users. But don't get too excited – these numbers are a projection for 2028, and are purely steeped in the hypothetical. And while Samsung's proposal is a solid foundation for future worldwide, accessible service, it's not the first to come up with the idea: Google, Facebook, and other corporations have already made some headway in that area, theoretically. Guess we'll have to wait and see who gets there first.
