World of Warcraft may already be a decade old but that still hasn't stopped it from being one of the most popular MMOs around. However, even with some saying that it's about time Blizzard come out with a sequel, chances of that happening soon are next to null.
But although World of Warcraft II may not be on the horizon, a follow-up to the expansion pack Legion may already be in the works.
Executive Producer for Blizzard Entertainment, J. Allen Brack, cited the failings of other sequels promising MMOs as the reason behind the hesitation to create a next installment to World of Warcraft.
"You know, there's not really a great model for a successful sequel MMO. Virtually all of them have been very significant failures and I think we're very conscious of that - not just small failures, either," he said during an interview with IGN at Gamescon 2015.
But even though a WOW sequel is not in Blizzard's game plan, a follow-up to Legion, which was only announced last week at Gamescon, is certainly already being entertained.
"We're not actively working on anything on the MMO front that is not World of Warcraft. We were completely dedicated to the Warlords of Draenor expansion and now the Legion expansion. We're even thinking about the expansion after that - we're already talking about what comes next," Brack said in the same interview.
So even though World of Warcraft will remain the only MMO in Blizzard's catalogue for the foreseeable future, and even though some gamers are asking for a revamp on some areas of the game that feel dated, Blizzard will continue adding WOW with expansions like Legion and its impending follow-up to breathe life in to the MMO.
