Constantine has come back from the dead. Well, sort of.
Matt Ryan, the actor who portrayed the title hero on the cancelled NBC drama Constantine, will reprise his role in an episode of the upcoming season of Arrow, The CW announced during its Television Critics Association press tour presentation Tuesday, as reported by Variety. John Constantine will guest star in the fifth episode of Season 4 of Arrow titled "Haunted," which is pretty appropriate considering that Constantine was all about the main protagonist trying to save the world from demons and supernatural terrors.
Constantine's storyline will be connected to the resurrection of Sarah Lance (Caity Lotz) before she appears on the Arrow and The Flash spinoff DC's Legends of Tomorrow, which premieres on The CW in 2016.
"We knew Sara was coming back and we wanted to have her soul... she needed to be resurrected, and even in the world of the comic books, he's the guy to do it," Arrow's executive producer and co-showrunner Wendy Mericle told Variety.
Mericle also pointed out that Constantine will fit in with the themes of magic and mysticism that have come up on Arrow recently. Constantine's experience in dealing with the supernatural and the occult could help Arrow's Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) when his famous arrows just won't do, according to The CW's description of the character.
Ryan later confirmed the news with a video message to Constantine and Arrow fans from his Twitter account.

NBC officially cancelled Constantine in May after halting production on the series a month after its premiere and ending its 13-episode run in February. The fate of Constantine was constantly uncertain throughout its time on NBC. Despite repeated efforts on social media from Constantine showrunner Daniel Cerone and fans to rally support to save the show and rumors that Warner Bros. had been shopping around the series to be picked up by another outlet, an actual full-fledged Season 2 of Constantine is still not in the cards.
However, joining the shared DC TV universe, if only briefly, is a step in the right direction for Constantine. Right now, it looks like this is only intended to be a one-off appearance for Constantine on The CW, but there's always the chance that he could pop up again on one of its other DC properties. But for now, Constantine fans should take solace knowing that their beloved character will live again on screen, if only for a moment.
Season 4 of Arrow premieres Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
