Looks like it's "Showtime, Synergy!": the latest trailer for Universal Pictures' Jem and the Holograms is finally here.
The updated version of the beloved 65-episode '80s classic casts the titular Jem (real name Jerrica Benton, played by Aubrey Peeples) as a YouTube sensation (with David Bowie-esque tastes, according to her glam rock facepaint).
"You're Internet famous," proclaims Kimber (Stefanie Scott), Jem's sister and fellow bandmate, "That's like the second-best thing to being actually famous!"
It's only after Jem finds Synergy, a hologram-projecting robot her long-lost father invented, that things start to get a little weird.
Directed by John M. Chu (Step Up, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), the cast includes Aubrey Peeples as Jem, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Ryan Guzman as Rio, as well as some special cameos by Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald (because if anything could make this even prettier in pink, it's definitely Molly Ringwald).
Here is the official synopsis:
"As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures' Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice."
Jem and the Holograms is set for wide release on October 23.
