Sprint is expanding its international coverage with a new add-on calling, texting and high-speed roaming plan.
Sprint announced on Tuesday its new Sprint Open World add-on for existing plans, which offers customers free calls and texts to Canada and Mexico. It will cost just five cents per minute to make calls to Latin America, the Dominican Republic and more than 180 other countries.
Customers will also get free calls and texts while traveling in Canada, Mexico and more than a dozen other Latin American countries, all without roaming charges. Sprint Open World customers will also get 1GB of free data when traveling to Mexico, Canada, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Paraguay. Sprint will soon add Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela to its list of Open World participating countries.
The free data will allow travelers to send vacation photos to family and friends back home, or to download the perfect playlist for the flight without having to pay international data charges. If 1GB won't be enough for all your vacation needs, then you can pay an additional $30 per GB, billed in megabyte increments.
"We're opening up the world and breaking down borders so more Sprint customers can stay in touch with the people who are important to them," said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure in a press release. "Sprint is making it easier for our customers to connect without roaming charges or excessive fees for calls or texts."
Sprint Open World has no base plan restrictions, and is targeted at U.S. customers who frequently travel to Canada and Mexico, or make long-distance calls from the States to Canada, Mexico and Latin American countries.
Those who plan to travel to Europe, the Middle East or Asia will be charged 20 cents per minute for calls, with free texting, and data costing $30 per GB.
Sprint has an older Global Roaming add-on that is also free, which charges 20 cents per minute for calls, with free texting and 2G of free data in Mexico, Canada and other select countries.
This new international calling, texting, data and roaming add-on from Sprint follows international plans recently announced by other mobile carriers. T-Mobile launched Mobile Without Borders last month, with unlimited free calls from the U.S. to Mexico and Canada, as well as 4G LTE data and unlimited calling and texting when visiting Mexico and Canada. The add-on comes at no extra cost for new customers and current Simple Choice customers, and just $10 per month for promotional or business customers.
