What do you get when you say "Beetlejuice" three times? You get more Beetlejuice — this time in the form of a sequel to the hit 1988 film by Tim Burton.
The first mention of a Beetlejuice sequel came in an MTV interview with Michael Keaton in early 2014.
"I've e-mailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff," Keaton told MTV. "I always said that's the one thing I'd like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another."
Keaton went on to say that Burton was "involved" in the possible sequel. But it wasn't until later in the year that Burton admitted to Beetlejuice 2 being in the works. At the time, he said the film was in its preliminary stage, but added that the project does have a script.
"I think there is now a better chance than ever... I miss that character," said Burton to IGN. "There's something that's cathartic and amazing about it. I think it's closer than ever."
Of course, that's only two mentions, and we all know that it takes saying "Beetlejuice" three times to get him to appear. And that recently happened when Winona Ryder, who portrayed Lydia in the original film, spoke about the sequel on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
"Um, I think I can confirm it, because Tim Burton did this interview — like, it was very hush-hush, top secret ... and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, 'Oh yeah, we're doing it and Winona's going to be in it,' and I was like [shocked face]," Ryder told Meyers.
So that's three "Beetlejuices" and confirmation that a sequel is in the works. The only question remaining is whether it will feature the original ghosts portrayed by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin and a dance number with music by Harry Belafonte.
