The CW recently announced that season two of its comic book-based series, The Flash, will feature the iconic character of Wally West. Not only that, but today, the network also announced that actor Keiynan Lonsdale (Insurgent) has signed up to take on the role.
"Just like when we met Grant for the first time, we instantly knew Keiynan embodied all the heart and courage of a hero," said The Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg to Variety. "We are so excited to be bringing this much-beloved character onto the show."
In the comic books, Wally West is the nephew of The Flash's love interest and girlfriend Iris West. However, on the TV series, Iris doesn't have any siblings, as pointed out at this year's earlier Superman Celebration by Candice Patton, who plays Iris on the show, although she hinted that Wally West was a possibility for the series. But as The CW is calling him a season two regular character, it's likely he'll get a new origin story that somehow brings him into the West family.
In the comics, Wally eventually becomes Kid Flash after a freak accident at the Central City police laboratory gives him the same powers as The Flash. Eventually he helps found the Teen Titans and becomes The Flash himself. Wally also recently got a reintroduction in DC Comics' New 52.
Season one teased that we'll see a few more speedsters, as well, thanks to the introduction of the multiverse. The CW recently confirmed we'll also see Jay Garrick, as portrayed by Teddy Sears, who served as the original Golden Age comics version of The Flash.
So what else can fans expect in The Flash's second season? The San Diego Comic-Con panel last month confirmed the following: the "big bad" villain of the season will be Zoom, Patty Spivot will arrive in Central City, there will be a time jump between the first and second season, we'll see hints of Caitlin becoming Killer Frost and Cisco becoming Vibe, and the rogues gallery will expand to include even more villains. It's also likely we haven't heard the last of Dr. Harrison Wells and Gorilla Grodd.
The Flash season two debuts on The CW on October 6.
