In 2012, a startup called Bohemian Guitars launched its first line of playable instruments, but these were no ordinary guitars. Its founders were inspired by street musicians who recycle old materials to create their own instruments. The result was a guitar that used an old oil can for its body.
Not only was it a unique novelty, it was immediately apparent that the metal body of the oil can created a richer, more resonant sound than a traditional guitar body was capable of. The earliest models were custom made by hand, but demand (and a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign) forced Bohemian to upgrade its processes. Now the company manufactures its own oil can bodies for its guitars, and is back with two new, customer-requested products.
"Boho Series 2.0" consists of the world's first oil can bodied ukulele and oil can bass guitar. An upgraded guitar is also available. Both new instruments are available with oil cans that feature new designs, and you can get the original oil can guitar in the new designs as well.
To launch these new products, Bohemian has once again turned to crowdfunding, though this time the company has chosen Indiegogo as its funding source. Like most professional crowdfunding projects, Bohemian's is essentially a pre-order campaign combined with a little clever PR.
The Boho Series 2.0 campaign has already reached nearly double its funding goal in its first eight days. Prices range from $99 to $599, depending on product and customization options, along with a few "early bird" options that feature selected products at lower prices for the first hundred or so supporters.
Bohemian Guitars' core product catalog can be found on the company's website.
