Dr. Dre Set To Release First Album In 16 Years Aug. 7 Exclusively On Apple Music

It has been 16 years since we last saw an album from Dr. Dre. With the exception of singles like "Kush" and "I Need a Doctor," which were set to feature on his much-anticipated, but eventually abandoned, album "Detox," it seemed that the rapper/entrepreneur was moving away from writing and producing music altogether.

Dre cleared the air about the failure of "Detox" on his own Beats 1 Radio Show The Pharmacy, saying, "I didn't like it. It wasn't good ... I worked my a-- off on it and I don't think I did a good enough job," before announcing the release of a new 16-track album titled "Compton: The Soundtrack," set to be released on iTunes ($14) and Apple Music this Friday, Aug. 7. This would be his first since the 1999 full-length album "2001."

The news is far from surprising for those who know of Dre's relationship with Apple, as he had signed on as CEO and founder of Beats, which the company bought for $3.2 billion in 2014. The record itself is inspired by the upcoming biopic Straight Outta Compton, based on the legendary hip-hip group he founded as well.

Dre, in the company of Ice Cube and the film's director F. Gary Gray, revealed, "I was leaving the set, coming to the studio, and I felt myself just being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album."

The new project, which will come out a week before the movie that inspired it, boasts a stellar roster of features, from Kendrick Lamar to Snoop Dogg to Ice Cube. From the looks of it, this will be the final album of his career as an artist.
