California-based watchmaker Nico Gerard unveiled the Pinnacle line, composed of Swiss timepieces that have a special band that allows wearers to attach a 38mm Apple Watch.
Wearing the Pinnacle will have users wear a classic watch on one side of their wrists and an Apple Watch on the other side.
While there have been many attempts by luxury timepiece companies to merge the classic luxury watches with the high-tech smartwatches of today, Nico Gerard's take on the combination may be taking it a little too far.
The practicality of the Pinnacle is dragged down by the bulkiness of having two watches on a wearer's wrist. In addition to the extra weight, it would not be comfortable for users to try to rest their arms flatly on a surface. The faces of both the classic watch and the Apple Watch will also be more exposed to potential scratches due to this limitation.
When Mashable tested the proposed construction of the Pinnacle using an Android Wear-powered smartwatch, annoyance at having to hold the palm up to use the smartwatch located in the inner wrist started building up.
The classic watch has a 41mm case with a mechanical, Swiss-made NG2824A automatic movement system, as noted by Nico Gerard. Other features on the classic watch are water resistance up to 100 meters and a date indicator.
The Pinnacle watches are named the Nico Gerard Pinnacle, the Skyview Pinnacle and the Sunrise Pinnacle. The first two versions come with stainless steel bands, with the first model featuring a black face and the second version featuring a blue face. The Sunrise Pinnacle, on the other hand, features an 18 karat gold band with a red face.
The Skyview Pinnacle is a limited edition product with only 99 pieces, with the Sunrise Pinnacle also having the same status but limited even more to only 88 pieces.
Pre-orders for the Pinnacle are no ongoing. The Nico Gerard Pinnacle is the least expensive of the three models at $9,300, with a delivery window of between 10 months and 12 months. The Skyview Pinnacle has a price tag of $9,500 with a delivery window of between eight months and 10 months. Lastly, the Sunrise Pinnacle has a whopping price tag of $112,000, but customers that purchase the watch will only be waiting six weeks to eight weeks.
Purchasing a watch from the Pinnacle line includes the Apple Watch, with a 38mm stainless steel Apple Watch coming with the Nico Gerard Pinnacle and the Skyview Pinnacle. The Sunrise Pinnacle, on the other hand, comes with a gold Apple Watch Edition.
"The movements take six months to make and certify," said Nico Gerard CEO Andy Pluemer in an email to Mashable, explaining why delivery time is very long. "We have sequenced the production of the models with the limited editions being produced first," he added.
