How Social Media Helped Undrafted Prospect Land An NFL Contract

Sometimes, you have to be your own best salesman.

LaVance Taylor, an undrafted running back with nothing to lose, tried his luck Wednesday, July 29, by tweeting a 12-minute YouTube highlight reel of himself at the University of Central Missouri to the Kansas City Chiefs official Twitter account. On Thursday night – just over 24 hours later on Thursday night – the Chiefs announced that they had signed him to an undisclosed deal.

Taylor couldn't believe it, hopping back on Twitter to express his shock and sheer joy.

In addition to taking a chance, Taylor also had a little luck — as Chiefs running back Keshawn Hill suffered a hamstring injury earlier on Thursday, creating the need for the franchise to fill his roster spot.

The fact that Taylor is a local Missouri kid makes this story that much sweeter. Just because Taylor signed a contract doesn't mean he'll make the team's final roster cut — but it's one step at a time. The 5'11, 195-pound rusher ran for 1,918 yards and 15 touchdowns for Central Missouri last season, while also leading the team in receptions with 38 for 427 additional yards and two more TDs.

This story definitely reinforces the adage "it doesn't hurt to ask."
