Nostalgia is a funny thing. It's a longing for times long gone, a desire to experience things as they once were.
That's part of what makes Don Draper's "Nostalgia" pitch in the first season of AMC's Mad Men so effective. It hits home for the audience and for the characters on screen. With the one year anniversary of Bungie's ever-evolving Destiny on the horizon, one YouTube user by the name Micah Bell has taken it upon himself to combine Draper's nostalgia pitch with memories of Destiny's early days.
The result is a sentimental look back at one of last year's most surprising and divisive games. As Draper's character remarks in the video, in Greek, nostalgia literally means the pain of an old wound. Taken in that context, Destiny players have plenty of old battle scars, and watching footage of the game from a year ago is likely to bring back the pain once again.
But mixed in with the pain for slogging through the Vault of Glass for hours on end praying for a certain item drop or those countless crafting material farming runs are some very real fond memories. Destiny is a social game after all. Bringing down a raid boss for the first time is a team effort, and sharing those victories with other players (along with the ability to burst into spontaneous dance with virtual friends) is why Destiny has continued to endure even a year later.
Of course, a healthy dose of new content also keeps player's coming back for more, and Bungie has and will continue to deliver in that department. But as the game changes with new missions, items and locations, those who were there at the very beginning will still look back on those early days of the game fondly. It was a simpler time. Auto-rifles were overpowered. Raid bosses could be cheesed to death. And nobody knew how exotic weapon bounties work. The game is much different (and probably better), but it's still hard not to feel sentimental looking back on it all.
