Amazon and Nissan have started a marketing campaign in San Francisco where the online retail giant has put a giant Amazon Locker. Users can take their picture with the giant Amazon Locker and post it on social media along with the hashtag "#GiantLocker" to be eligible for a prize draw including the Nissan Rogue.
Amazon took residents of San Francisco by a surprise after it dropped a massive Amazon Locker near the Ferry Building. The giant locker soon grabbed attention of people in the area, with increasing speculation of what could be inside.
According to a PCWorld report, Amazon did not initially respond to media questions regarding the purpose of the giant locker but soon posted a picture of Nissan on it. However, the report says that both the companies have confirmed that it is a part of a marketing stunt by them.
Passerbys are encouraged to comment or post their picture with the Amazon Locker using the hashtag. They are then in with a chance to receive a code to win prizes and one lucky winner could also win the Nissan Rogue.
"One lucky participant will get the surprise of a lifetime when his/her code opens the giant door, and s/he wins a new Nissan Rogue," says a Nissan spokeswoman.
Amazon operates a self-service parcel delivery facility called the Amazon Locker where customers have the option to select any Locker location as the delivery address. Once the order is sent to the location, customers can retrieve their parcel using a unique code. The Amazon Locker service was initially launched in 2011 in select cities such as New York, London and Seattle and now the service is expanding in other cities of the U.S. and the UK.
In early 2014, Amazon delivered a Nissan Versa in a box with Amazon logo as part of the company's promotion. Amazon is one of the biggest online retailers and also sells cars. Even if a car is ordered via Amazon, customers still have to take the delivery from their local car dealers. This is not the first time that Amazon and Nissan are indulging in such a marketing ploy.
