Fresh off his stint on American Horror Story: Freak Show, FX fave Michael Chiklis is headed to Batman's hometown.
Gotham has scored the popular actor for a new character invented for the show. Chiklis will portray Captain Nathaniel Barnes of the GCPD, a hero, mentor and powerful ally to main character Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie). TV Line reports that Barnes is "a law and order zealot" who's "unafraid of making enemies" and "lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force."
Sounds like a guy right up Gordon's alley. But lest you think these two will be forever bosom buddies, their friendship will eventually be tested. Gotham's producers said that Barnes may be a strong ally for Gordon, "but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy." We're guessing a rift will develop between them late in the season based on some kind of ethics dispute, leading Barnes to become a bit more like Chiklis' character Vic Mackey, from The Shield.
Gotham's showrunners have been known to introduce well known characters using alternative names, such as "Ivy Pepper" instead of Pamela Eisley (Poison Ivy) or "Jerome Valeska" (Cameron Monaghan) as a man very likely to become the Joker. Could Chiklis' Nathaniel Barnes be a similar wolf in sheep's clothing? Perhaps he's an analogy for Batman Eternal's Jason Bard or someone similar.
Season 2 of Gotham, which is slated to introduce a huge slate of new characters and include the show's version of Joker's origin story, premieres Monday, September 25, 2015 at 8:00 P.M.
