There's nothing quite like enjoying a good read over a nice cup of coffee.
That's what the New York Times and Starbucks must have been thinking, increasing their partnership Tuesday (July 21) by announcing that the newspaper will offer free articles to users of the Starbucks app, which counts 10 million My Starbucks Rewards loyalty members, within the first half of 2016. It's currently unknown how many free articles the Times will make available via the Starbucks app next year, though.
However, this news increases the companies' current partnership, which enables customers at Starbucks to have free digital access to 15 articles daily on NYTimes.com in many Starbucks' locations through its own Starbucks Digital Network.
"We have enjoyed a long and fruitful association with Starbucks and we're delighted that this agreement will further extend our digital relationship," said Mark Thompson, president and CEO of The New York Times Company, via a press release statement, as reported by the Business Wire. "This is another in a series of arrangements we have made recently in order to ensure that The Times continue to expand the reach of our journalism to new and interesting pools of readers. We're particularly happy that Starbucks has also put in place an appealing incentive to turn these readers into subscribers."
Added chairman and CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz: "We have proudly sold millions of copies of the paper in Starbucks stores for more than a decade, and are excited to bring this experience to the next level by enabling Starbucks loyal customers to take the best of The New York Times with them wherever they go, whenever they want it."
The partnership will also allow My Starbucks Rewards loyalty members the opportunity to earn Stars and redeem them for food and beverages at Starbucks.
