The last big PlayStation 4 system update, numbered 2.55, was designed to help the console run a bit more smoothly. Essentially, the update was built to help another update - namely, the big 2.50 update that Sony released back in March. To be honest, the 2.55 update did help a lot of the console's software to run better; unfortunately, it also looks like the update may have caused a few problems of its own.
For the past few weeks, PlayStation owners have been reporting that their consoles are having trouble reading discs...which isn't exactly a good thing if you're still buying physical games. The popular theory is that this sudden trouble with disc-reading is because of a bug introduced in the 2.55 update - as a result, Sony has already started working on a fix. That's right: an update that was designed to help another update now needs its own update.
Dubbed 2.57, the latest PlayStation system update is almost ready for deployment: though the company has yet to release an official launch date, Sony did confirm that the 2.57 update is "coming soon."
PS4 system software update 2.57 coming soon, it's a minor update that improves stability of some features.

Sony's announcement is extremely vague: rather than addressing what many consider to be the sole reason for the update, Sony simply confirms that the update will "improve stability of some features." Granted, there is a chance that the update will help and/or tweak some of the console's other systems, but given the timing, it's easy to assume that this update is a direct response to the PlayStation 4's new disc-reading issues.
Thankfully, it seems said issues are a relatively self-contained anomaly - most users haven't had any sort of trouble whatsoever. Hopefully, that won't change - then again, there's always a chance that the 2.57 update will need an update of its own.
