There were rumors that Samsung was getting ready to release updated Galaxy Mega phablets and now new reports show the smartphones will come in a 5.1-inch and 6-inch model.
Samsung launched its Galaxy Mega phablets in 2013 in both 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch models. The handsets had mid-range specs and were viewed as a way for consumers to experience a Samsung phablet at a relatively low price, which up until that time remained exclusive to the Galaxy Note series.
The 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega proved to be the most popular and is still currently offered by AT&T and Sprint. In March we reported that Samsung was preparing to release new and updated Galaxy Mega phablets and two new reports gave us some details on what to expect when Samsung officially launched the Galaxy Mega 2 series.
An Indian import data sheet shows a Samsung smartphone with the model number SM-G750A and a 5.1-inch display. It was assumed this handset was going to be the Galaxy S5 Neo, but now that the always-reliable evleaks has jumped in and tweeted that "The Samsung SM-G750 self identifies as 'Mega 2.'" The import data sheet lists a SM-G750F with a larger 6-inch display. It's been assumed that these two devices are Samsung's next-generation Galaxy Mega series.
The import data sheet does not reveal either of the smartphone's other specs, but the latest reports have claimed that both Galaxy Mega handsets would pack in a 720p display and either a Snapdragon 800 or Snapdragon 600 processor. The devices will almost certainly ship with 16GB of internal storage and also feature microSD expansion slots that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. In terms of wireless connectivity, we can expect a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and GPS.
Customers in the U.S. will likely only get the chance to purchase the 6-inch Galaxy Mega 2, since only the 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega variant was offered by both AT&T and Sprint. We'll keep our eyes out for any Galaxy Mega 2 news and report back to once new information becomes available.
