The first teasers for FX's original series Bastard Executioner, starring Lee Jones, was released online on Monday.
In the first teaser, Jones' warrior character is seen dramatically falling to his knees as it appears he is praying in front of a cross. Ironically enough, the cross in front of him gives the illusion that a sword has gone through his head, symbolism for his job as an executioner. The scene is set to red lighting as he slowly lowers his head, with murderous weapons hanging on the wall behind him.
In the second teaser, the viewer hears the violent sound of a scythe smacking around the grass. We then see Jones' character swinging his sword against an enemy. The clip suggests that the main character cannot space his violent ways, failing at a life as a farmer to return to the sword.
The trailer for Bastard Executioner first debuted at Comic-Con 2015. The series is set in Medieval times, with the main character swearing off his sword after war. However, he soon becomes an executioner, proving that violence always lies ahead for him.
The series is created by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and also stars a few Sons alumni, including Katey Sagal and Timothy V. Murphy. Other cast members include Stephen Moyer, Darren Evans, Sarah Sweeney, Matthew Rhys and even the show creator himself.
Sutter began writing the scripts last year, after Sons of Anarchy, which also aired on FX, wrapped up. He wrote the pilot script, which will be directed by Paris Barclay (who previously directed episodes of Sons).
Bastard Executioner will debut in September, with a two-hour pilot episode. Watch the first teasers, titled "Kneel" and "Scythe," below.
