How'd you like to play a video game that promises to offer plenty of DLC — but will give you every last bit of it for free?
Delivering a gut-punch to the traditional DLC business model, Street Fighter V will charge you just one time for your copy of the game and all related content. DLC will later be made available for free to owners of the game. That's right: free.
The initial cast of playable characters will total 16, four of which are said to be brand new to the franchise. It comes as no surprise that Capcom plans to add more playable characters over time, as downloadable content. When Capcom adds new characters to the roster, it won't cost players a dime.
Instead, the developer is doing something a little different. As you win matches, you'll earn "Fight Money," which is Street Fighter's new in-game currency. Save up your Fight Money, because this virtual money is what you'll use to "buy" DLC characters. If you don't have enough Fight Money, you'll be able to use real-world money to buy playable characters.
But who wants to do that, when you can get them for free?
This is a radical change in policy from Capcom, which in the past has charged for bundled DLC content very infrequently. For Street Fighter V, the plan is to release individual, unbundled characters, one at a time. This will allow players to decide which new characters they want, and skip the rest.
Capcom says that tweaks to the game will always be free; you won't have to pay anything when newer versions of the game become available.
Street Fighter V is currently scheduled for a March 2016 release exclusively for PlayStation 4 and PC.
