When Marvel released its first Phase One Blu-Ray box set, it knew that a simple box wouldn't suffice. As a result, fans were treated to the S.H.I.E.L.D. briefcase — sure, it wasn't all that different from a regular box on the outside, but the padded interior and glowing Tesseract were more than enough to set it apart from just about every other box set out there.
Now that Ant-Man is in theaters, Marvel's Phase Two has come to a close. Naturally, that means it's time to bring the films together in a collection — but how will Marvel do it? Will the Phase Two box set be a simple repeat of the first, or will Marvel knock it out of the park a second time?
Well, considering that most of Marvel's Phase Two movies were centered around the Infinity Stones, why not use them as inspiration for the box set? Oh, and we're not talking about another briefcase with a light-up rock inside — the Blu-Rays are actually inside an Infinity Stone:
Alright, technically speaking, it's not inside the Infinity Stone itself, but the casing that surrounds the Power Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy. Either way, it's gorgeous.
Sadly, Marvel hasn't released much in the way of details — there's no real way to tell how big the Phase Two box set is or how the discs are arranged inside. The Phase One briefcase was pretty big, as it was based on an actual briefcase — but the Orb that the Phase Two box set is inspired by isn't nearly as big. On top of that, storing something that's almost completely rounded won't be easy, especially if it's the size of a basketball.
One thing that Marvel did confirm was the price: as was the case with its predecessor, the Phase Two box set isn't cheap. The full set will run for $249 (according to the Amazon listing), but you won't be ablet to buy it for some time — after all, Ant-Man is still in theaters, and Marvel certainly isn't about to sacrifice potential ticket sales anytime soon.
At this rate, what will the Phase Three box set look like? If it's not a full-scale, wearable replica of the Infinity Guantlet, we'll be disappointed.
Expect to see Marvel's Phase Two box set available later this year — if you'd like to pre-order, just head on over to Amazon.
