The NBA playoffs are as exciting as any major sport's postseason out there.
Now, Mark Cuban has come up with a way that could make the playoffs even better—by expanding them.
The billionaire businessman and Dallas Mavericks owner pitched expanding the playoffs from its current eight teams in each conference to 10 squads per conference during this week's Board of Governors owners' meetings in Las Vegas.
Cuban even believes that expanding the playoff picture could be a deterrent to teams tanking. (Cough Philadelphia 76ers cough).
"With all the concern about getting a high draft pick taking precedent over winning games, the disparity in talent between conferences and the general challenge of team building, I asked the question," Cuban wrote on his Cyber Dust social media messaging app, as reported by ESPN. "Why do just 8 teams per conference make the playoffs? Why not 10? The increased number would reduce the chances of good teams missing the playoffs in the stronger conference.
"It would keep things interesting for fans longer into the season," he continued. "Teams that suffered difficult injuries would increase their chances of recovering."
Cuban proposes giving the top two seeds in each conference a playoff bye, while making the bottom two seeds play each other in a best-of-five opening round series.
Like the idea and think it would make the current NBA playoffs that much better? While the premise is intriguing, there's something about the current eight-team structure that we wouldn't like to see get fooled around with.
We say keep it like it is, but nice try, Mark...especially in that tougher Western Conference, where your Mavs could miss the playoff cut.
