Microsoft will release Windows 10 to the general public on July 29, and Amazon has started taking preorders of the upcoming operating system on USB drive starting at $119.99.
Rumors of Windows 10 on a USB drive have been surfacing in the tech industry for quite some time but until now Microsoft had kept silent regarding the media in which the software will be sold. VentureBeat reports a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed Windows 10 will also be available in a USB drive.
"Windows 10 will be available on USB drives for purchase in retail channels shortly after launch," said a Microsoft spokesperson to Venture Beat.
Amazon has also created preorder webpages for the upcoming operating system that reflects the sale of Windows 10 Home edition for $119.99 and Windows 10 Pro edition for $199.99.
The suggested retail prices of Windows 10 are the same as Windows 8.1 in the U.S.
Microsoft Store will also sell Windows 10 in USB drives. Amazon is currently the only retailer that has started the preorder page for Windows 10 on USB drives. Other retailers such as Best Buy may soon follow suit.
VentureBeat took screenshots of Amazon's Windows 10 on USB drive webpage, which shows a release date of Aug. 16. However, the release date has now been pushed further to Aug. 30.
Microsoft released the Windows 8 to the general public in October 2012 and the operating system faced a lot of criticism. Windows 8 had major user interface changes and many people complained about the absence of the "Start" menu. Microsoft responded to user complaints and brought back the Start menu in Windows 10.
"The Start menu is back in an expanded form, plus we'll bring over your pinned apps and favorites so they're ready and waiting for you," stated Microsoft.
The software maker also claims that Windows 10 boots and resumes more quickly than its predecessors.
Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to eligible devices. Check out Microsoft's official webpage offering assistance on how to upgrade.
