Lava will launch sub-$200 Iris X1 Android KitKat smartphone

India's award-wining mobile company Lava International is one to beat, more so now that it plans to launch an Iris X1, a new mobile phone powered by the Android KitKat with price pegged at around $130 or Rs 8,000.

Not much has been disclosed about the Lava Iris X1, but we've gathered a few important specifications that may give you initial impression of the handset soon to roll. The Iris X1 allegedly has a 4.5-inch IPS display with an 8MP rear camera and a high-quality media output. Some people are expecting it to have the Snapdragon processor of Qualcomm. The mobile handset aims at providing users easy multi-tasking experience, research also says.

"To add to it, Lava is going to price it aggressively under Rs 8,000. Riding on the success of its Iris Pro series, Lava is really upbeat about this offering," Lava says in a statement.

No final word on the specific date of launching was disclosed yet, but reports say consumers may expect it in the coming days.

"Riding on the success of its Iris Pro series, Lava is really upbeat about this offering and plans to launch the phone in the next few days with a pan India 360 degree marketing campaign," Lava adds.

Various reports say the upcoming launch of the affordable handset is said to bring more fierce competition to the country dubbed as the third largest market for smartphones. Research company, International Data Corporation (IDC), reveals that India is, in fact, among the fastest-growing smartphone markets in the world, if it were to gauge by the smartphone adoption rate the firm picked up in 2013.

The IDC also discloses that sales volume of smartphones in India swelled nearly three times to more than 44 million last year as sustained by a solid acceptance of affordable mobile phones manufactured by local handset makers such as Karbonn and Micromax. Samsung, however, still leads the industry players with 38 percent of mobile shares, Micromax with 16 percent, Karbonn with 10 percent, Sony with five percent and Lava with 4.7 percent in the last quarter of 2013.

If India is among the fastest-growing country in the mobile handset industry, its homegrown company Lava is said to be similarly among the fastest-growing mobile manufacturers in the industry. In India, it is the 5th most trusted mobile maker, based on Brand Trust Report 2014. At the Voice & Data Telecom Leadership Forum Awards ceremony at The Oberoi Hotel, New Delhi, Lava was chosen as "Emerging Company of the year 2013."
