After an impressive career that included wearing various hats such as screenwriter, animator and magna artist, Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki decided to retire his chair back in 2013 after the release of his farewell animated feature film The Wind Rises.
However, Miyazaki will now return to his role by directing his very first 3D-animated short film with the use of CG.
The animated short will be a 10-minute film expected to take the director three years to make. While it is not yet known how far along production for the short is, we do know that 3D short will feature a hairy caterpillar and that Miyazaki will use CG instead of hand-drawing the animation. It will be the first time he will use CG in a major project.
Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki, spoke about his father's reasons for making a new CG project in an interview last month, Anime News Network reports, saying that the 74-year-old needed something to "fiddle around with."
In an interview last fall, the director said he was lucky that he stayed away from using CG in his work. However, it seems like using computerized animation has rubbed off on him, since his son uses this kind of animation to bring to life his character in the Ghibli TV series Ronia The Robber's Daughter.
"I think talent decides everything," the elder Miyazaki said. "More than the method, what's important is the talent using it. There's nothing inherently wrong or right about a method, whether it be pencil drawings or 3D CG."
Miyazaki is known for his animated works such as Princess Mononoke (dubbed the Star Wars of anime), Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky and My Neighbor Totoro. Fans can learn more about the Oscar winner's work in the documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, available to stream on Netflix.
The animated short is being made specifically for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka,Tokyo, and it is not yet known if the film will be shown elsewhere.
