'Doctor Who' Season 9: The First Official Trailer Is Here

The Doctor and Clara are back.

Doctor Who returns on September 19 for its ninth season, and the second starring Peter Capaldi. The season premiere date was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast were part of a big panel in Hall H. Also shown off at Comic-Con: the first Season 9 trailer.

Fortunately for you, you don't have to be in San Diego to see it. BBC America has been kind enough to share it with the rest of us, and you can watch it below.

In Season 9, the Doctor and his companion Clara Oswald are embracing life, living "the glory days" of their adventures across time and space, according to showrunner Steven Moffat. Capaldi returns (with bigger hair!) as the Doctor, with Jenna Coleman as his best friend and companion.

Clara has gone through quite the evolution over the course of the series. When she first premiered with Matt Smith, she felt like exactly what she was: a replacement for Karen Gillan's Amy Pond. But when Capaldi arrived as the twelfth Doctor, she suddenly became utterly essential to the show, growing into a fully three-dimensional character.

The trailer is filled with little snippets that show our two heroes in all sorts of mayhem, along with the return of Michelle Gomez' Missy (aka the Master), several new alien monsters, and a decidedly dark-and-scary tone. Despite the chills (those eyeless people are super creepy), it's fun to see the Doctor smiling and enjoying himself after last season's existential angst. Also keep watching to the very end for a super juicy teaser starring a very noteworthy guest star.

Exciting, don't you think? Who do you suppose Maisie Williams is playing? Some have suggested she could be a young Clara, and you could see a resemblance there, but we're hoping for something a little more thrilling, like a character from the Doctor's distant past. Whoever she is, he recognizes her, and she him.

September 19, 2015: mark your calendar, hire a babysitter and reschedule surgery. Doctor Who is coming.
