Disney has officially announced who will helm the next Star Wars spin-off: The Lego Movie's directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
The next installment of the iconic intergalactic franchise will be part of the post-Episode VI anthology series, and will tell the story of fan-favorite smuggler-turned-Alliance leader Han Solo.
An official statement from both Lord and Miller reveals their excitement over joining the team of George Lucas' history-making enterprise, promising fans to retain the integrity of the original trilogy:
"This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you're late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all."
The new film will be released on May 25, 2018, one year after Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens debuts. The screenplay will be written by Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill) and Jon Kasdan (Freaks and Geeks).
