Today at Minecon in London, Telltale Games took the wraps off of an upcoming title. It's one that was previously announced, but with no details, leaving gamers with a big, giant question mark over the entire project.
How could Telltale do its award-winning storytelling/adventure thing based on a franchise that has zero story elements whatsoever?
The developer's answer is Minecraft: Story Mode, a game starring characters inside the world of Minecraft that see it as a real, living, breathing world. The game stars Patton Oswalt as main character Jesse, who along with his friends is sort of an in-world geek about the things that make Minecraft what it is. Jesse's group revolves around fandom of a legendary band of adventurers called the Order of the Stone.
The Order was made up of four individuals who were each best-in-class: a Warrior, a Redstone Engineer, a Griefer and an Architect. Together, they once slayed an Ender Dragon — yes, the same Ender Dragon that serves as Minecraft's boss.
Like all good geeks, Jesse and his friends express their fandom by attending a convention. In this case, it's called (what else?) EnderCon. While there, Jesse discovers that something's horribly wrong. A dreadful terror has somehow been unleashed, and this band of friends decide that the Order of the Stone are the only heroes in the world capable of saving the (pixelated) world. So they set out on a journey to find the Order.
Developed by Telltale along with Mojang and members of the Minecraft community, Story Mode features an eclectic voice cast that includes Martha Plimpton, Paul Reubens, Corey Feldman, Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Dave Fennoy and Billy West.
The episodic game is expected to arrive later this year, and it's important to note that it's a standalone game; owning Minecraft is not a prerequisite for playing Minecraft: Story Mode. Telltale is creating versions of it for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
