Samsung apparently obtained an "S6 EDGE+" trademark in the U.S., suggesting that a larger version of its dual-edge handset is en route.
Various rumors so far have suggested that Samsung plans to launch larger versions of its flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Several details came to light recently, and now another tidbit of information seems to confirm such plans.
The folks over at Dutch site Galaxy Club have uncovered a trademark application that grants Samsung the right to use the S6 EDGE+ name in the U.S. The "+" in the trademark name suggests that this variant will be a larger Galaxy S6 Edge model.
The files published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) further reveal that Samsung filed the trademark application on June 26 and received the rights over the "S6 EDGE+" name on June 30.
Under the "Goods and Services" section of the trademark listing, the purpose of the "S6 EDGE+" name is classified as "for smartphones." No other information is available at this point, but the newly-obtained trademark suggests that Samsung may launch a Galaxy S6 Edge+ phablet soon enough.
Recent rumors, meanwhile, have suggested that the Galaxy S6 Edge+ will come with a 5.5- or 5.7-inch display and some different specs compared with the existing Galaxy S6 Edge. Most notably, the S6 Edge+ version will reportedly ditch the in-house Exynos processor in favor of a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808. This would translate to an inferior performance compared with the Exynos 7420-powered Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, which in turn indicates that the Galaxy S6 Edge+ may come with a lower price tag.
This Galaxy S6 Edge+ variant is also rumored to sport model number SM-G928, internally dubbed as "Project Zero 2." Other rumored specs include 32GB of internal storage, a 16-megapixel primary camera with OIS and 4K video recording, a 5-megapixel front camera and a 2,000 mAh battery.
The Galaxy S6 Edge+ is also expected to boast the much-touted dual-edge display of the existing Galaxy S6 Edge.
Samsung made no official announcement so far, however, which means that all of the aforementioned specs are based solely on leaks and speculation at this point. The trademark, meanwhile, is another story, as it clearly indicates that Samsung indeed plans to launch a larger Galaxy S6 Edge.
