There may be no hotter show on television than Game of Thrones. The no-holds-barred high fantasy airs just 10 episodes a year, but when those eps are running, they dominate water coolers everywhere.
The series stirred up some of its biggest controversies ever this year, and with just two more seasons expected, the end is in sight. So, faithful viewers are desperate to find out how it concludes.
HBO has just announced its Game of Thrones plans for San Diego Comic-Con 2015, and it sounds like the network is about to outdo itself. "Game of Thrones: Experience the Realm" will let convention attendees enter the world of Westeros in inventive new ways and walk away with some customized swag and stuff you can share with your friends online.
The Experience boasts three unique components that are sure to have Con goers buzzing. First up is a stop that combines swordplay with art to create a one-of-a-kind self-portrait. HBO says it's an "homage to beloved character Arya Stark's early days of sword training." You start by having a silhouette portrait taken, and then you step in front of a huge projection screen with a replica wooden training sword in hand. You'll hit targets as they appear on the screen. Once you're done, you'll walk away with a portrait like no other that you can keep.
Next up, stop at the Dragon booth to have a green-screen animation made that depicts you being incinerated into ash by Daenerys Targaryen's dragons. A similar third area will turn you into a White Walker through the use of computer imagery. Both of these will immediately be available in animated GIF form so you can share them online.
In addition to these unique opportunities, the Iron Throne will be on site, as will the Mountain's gigantic sword; you can use both for photo ops. There will also be the usual costume displays, a gallery of work from the Game of Thrones Compendium book, and you'll have the opportunity to buy a limited-edition Con-only T-shirt.
While the Game of Thrones experience will be open to all Comic-Con attendees, a special promotion being run by HBO Now gives subscribers a chance at VIP access. Winners will get special early access Thursday through Sunday, before the experience opens for the day. See the sweepstakes' website to find out how to enter.
"Game of Thrones: Experience the Realm" will be located at the Omni Hotel, right across the street from the Convention Center. It opens at 11:00 a.m. and runs until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, it'll be open from 9:00 a.m. until noon.
