Motorola Droid Turbo users will soon be able to get a taste of the much-awaited Android 5.1 Lollipop as soak tests for the Verizon-exclusive smartphone have finally begun.
Users of the Motorola Droid Turbo smartphone have reportedly been invited to take part in what is said to be an "early preview of a new software release" or the soak test Motorola carries out prior to the release of the final version. It is assumed that this new software is Android 5.1 Lollipop.
To be eligible for participation in the soak test, one needs to be a member of the Motorola Feedback Network.
"A number of our readers have been invited to "participate in an early preview of a new software release" through Motorola's Feedback Network. Of course, the invite doesn't mention Android 5.1 Lollipop, but this has to be it," reports Droid-Life.
For the unfamiliar, the Droid Turbo will skip Android 5.0 Lollipop and go straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop instead. Motorola is bypassing the Android 5.0 update for the Droid Turbo owing to lack of VoLTE support, which is an important feature for Verizon-based handsets. Therefore, the Droid Turbo is currently stuck on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
Previously, we reported that Motorola was allegedly eyeing a June 10 release of Android 5.1 Lollipop for the Droid Turbo. However, those plans did not materialize Motorola's David Schuster, Senior Director of Software Product Management, clarified that the software update for the Droid Turbo was still in the lab cycle.
"We are still in the lab test cycle and things are looking good," wrote Schluster on June 11, who gives frequent updates on the company's ongoing soak test statuses.
The software update for the Motorola Droid Turbo is set to bring features for Android 5.0 and Android 5.1 Lollipop users' way. These include a two-finger Quick Settings menu, battery saver mode that uses Project Volta, new Recent Apps page, new Material Design UI, Android ART runtime, improved lockscreen notifications and security features, Quick Settings flashlight, etc.
If the reports of the soak test for the Motorola Droid Turbo being carried out are indeed true, then the software update will likely make its way to the smartphone by the end of this week. Until then, users can get a glimpse of what the update will look like by visiting Verizon's web site.
