EA has made it perfectly clear that, when it comes to Star Wars Battlefront, multiplayer is first and foremost. While a cooperative mode is being included, nearly every piece of Battlefront media has been dedicated to showing off just what the multiplayer battles will be - and so far, the game is looking fantastic.
That being said, single-player fans are seemingly out of luck. The game won't come packed with a single-player story mode (a feature that most modern shooters feature, regardless of actual quality), meaning that those without an Internet connection might not get all that much out of the game. While it's a controversial choice, it's one that EA is firmly standing behind.
No statement solidifies that fact more than one given by DICE general manager Patrick Bach: in an interview with GameSpot, Bach confirmed that the studio never even considered giving Star Wars Battlefront a single-player campaign.
"To be honest, single-player was never in the plan. It was never the concept."
It may sound harsh, but there's a pretty decent reason for DICE ditching the campaign: most fans will argue that the Battlefield story missions are the weakest part of the entire package, while the multiplayer game is consistently excellent. When it came time to start building Star Wars Battlefront, it was a simple decision of whether to focus on quality or quantity.
"...then again, you could argue that we are comparing our campaigns with what some say are the greatest multiplayer games in the world. If you try to match that, you are probably doomed for failure. Or at least, it's very, very hard."
Star Wars Battlefront is no stranger to criticism, regardless of whether or not said criticism is legitimate. After the game was first shown at Star Wars Celebration, 'insider' (otherwise known as made-up) statistics were published online, and claimed that the shooter would be largely devoid of content. Since then, EA and DICE have been trying to prove that the game will be worth its $60 price tag - going by the game's fantastic E3 2015 showing, it looks like the studios are on the right track.
One way or another, fans will soon find out whether or not the game needs a single-player story mode: Star Wars Battlefront will hit store shelves on Nov. 17. If you can't wait that long, EA is holding a multiplayer Alpha test later this year; you can find out how to sign up here.
