From the outset, the Uncharted games were designed to look like movies. Before the first game launched, many claimed that the series could be the 'Indiana Jones game that never happened.' Three games later, and it's clear that Naughty Dog has crafted some of the best adventure movies ever...they just happen to be interactive, too.
Surprisingly, taking a game that was inspired by Hollywood and bringing it back into Hollywood isn't the easiest thing in the world. Sony has been trying to get an Uncharted movie off the ground for half a decade - sadly, fans are about as close to the movie now as they were back in 2010. The project has has seen no less than three separate production teams over the last five years - though, to be fair, it seemed like Seth Gordon's take on the franchise would actually stick.
Unfortunately, it seems like Uncharted's troubles aren't over yet: Seth Gordon has also left the project, reportedly due to shake-ups at Sony.
According to the Wrap, an insider at Sony has confirmed that Gordon has left the project. Sony offered no official comment, but Gordon's exit is supposedly due to huge creative changes that Sony chief Tom Rothman has made or is making. All things considered, it's likely that Sony doesn't want to sink all that much money into a game adaption - after all, it's not like video games have ever really survived the transition to the big screen.
So, where does this leave Uncharted? Basically, the project is back at square one. Sony has its producers lined up, and there's supposedly a draft of the script that's ready to go...but the team no longer has a director, much less a full cast and crew.
At this point, it doesn't look like Uncharted will be making its way to theaters anytime soon...at the very least, fans will be able to play through Uncharted 4: A Thief's End sometime next spring.
