Samsung Galaxy S5 trumps Apple iPhone 5S on launch weekend sales

The Samsung Galaxy S5 surpassed launch weekend sales of the Apple iPhone 5S, analysis of sales data shows.

Samsung revealed its much-awaited flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, at the Mobile World Congress in February this year. The handset hit the shelves on April 11 and so far has received an overwhelming response from customers.

According to iQmetrix, a retail management software provider in Canada and the United States, Samsung sold more Galaxy S5's during the launch weekend when compared with the iPhone 5S sales in its launch weekend of September 2013.

iQmetrix suggests that 25 percent of the smartphones sold in the U.S. and 18 percent sold in Canada from April 11 to April 13 this year were the Samsung Galaxy S5. However, 18 percent of smartphones sold in the U.S. and 13 percent sold in the Canada from Sept. 20 to Sept. 22, 2013, were the iPhone 5S.

The data the company collected from more than 15,000 retail stores in North America also reveals that the Samsung Galaxy S5 sales accounted for 41 percent of the total number of phones sold from April 11 to April 13 in the Southern U.S. region. The Northeast region saw 30 percent of the total phone sales as Galaxy S5; the Midwest, 23 percent; and the West, 21 percent. Samsung Galaxy S5 comprised 18 percent of the total phone sales in Canada.

"iQmetrix collects data from its RQ Retail Management system, utilized by independent wireless retailers across North America to process an estimated 14.5 million handset transactions each year. Information gathered from this substantial database provides a unique look into mobile phone, plan, add-on and accessory purchasing trends," said iQmetrix.

iQmetrix also unveiled data of the Galaxy S4 sales and iPhone 5 sales in the 6-month period leading up to the launch of the Galaxy S5 and iPhone 5S. The data reveals that even with the nearing launch date of its successor, the Galaxy S4 saw strong sales during the 2013 holiday season and also in January 2014.

However, iPhone 5 sales in the U.S. dropped as the 6-month lead-up period started for the launch of the iPhone 5S. The sales of the iPhone 5 remained low and flat in Canada during the 6-month lead-up period for the iPhone 5S.

The predecessors of the Galaxy S5 have given strong competition to iPhones. Samsung will hope that the latest S5 is able to attract more smartphone customers to help the Korean company account for a bigger chunk of the market.
