Uber's New Way To Recruit Drivers - A Video Game?

Uber has been experimenting with ways to recruit new drivers. Its latest attempt is launching a video game that allows users to experience what it would be like to be an Uber driver.

The game, called UberDrive, allows users to interact with maps and pick up clients, gaining extra points for getting passengers from A to B using the safest and most effective routes.

"UberDRIVE was designed as a fun and engaging resource for our driver-partners to hone their navigation skills if they choose to," said the company in a blog post. "It's also a great way for prospective drivers to experience firsthand what it's like to drive with Uber — there are links to sign up and start the screening process from directly within the game."

The game is also a way for Uber to potentially train its drivers. Because Uber drivers are not technically Uber employees – they're considered independent contractors – requiring drivers to undergo real training is a legal gray area. The new app would help Uber drivers learn about their city's streets and get better at operating a car for Uber.

"Throughout the gameplay experience, we've integrated educational elements to help enhance city knowledge. There are fun facts for the most important landmarks in the city and a simple trivia mode where riders quiz players to point out certain destinations on the map," Uber continued in the blog post.

Of course, the app is predominantly a way for Uber to entice people who might want to become real drivers for the company. Indeed, there is even a way to sign up to drive for Uber right within the app.

The game is currently only playable in San Francisco, however, Uber says that it will strongly consider expanding the app into other major cities, if really takes off. The game also offers up information about San Francisco landmarks.

While UberDrive does highlight a little of what it's like to be an Uber driver, it doesn't really go into the negative aspects of driving for the company. The game was developed as a side project by Uber employee Mike Truong, so even if the game ends up being a flop, the company really didn't invest much in it. Unfortunately for Android users, the low investment means that the game only made it to iOS, downloadable here.
