Xplore iX104 is probably the toughest tablet out yet but who will buy it for $5000?

Are you willing to dish out $5000 for arguably the toughest and most intriguing tablet in the market? That is the question Xplore hopes will be answered with a resounding "yes," but the market may not be ready for the iX104 tablet, even as experts and bloggers tout it as the best to be manufactured.

It just might cost too much for the general population to get on board at the moment, leaving it to the wealthy.

The company is touting the new tablet as the toughest yet available and is pushing it as a tablet that war correspondents and others in hard places to use as they believe and argue it will stand up to even the hardest of falls and attacks on its shell.

It's not light, weighing in at over five pounds, but it is being promoted as a great option for oil-rig workers, soldiers, census takers and civil engineers and others, including those working in hot spots where roughing it has become almost necessary.

The Xplore iX104 can even be submerged for around an hour in water over three feet deep and come out functioning as normal.

"The XC6 is the toughest and highest performance product Xplore has ever developed. It will perform very well in environments where device failure is not an option," said Mark Holleran, president and chief operating officer for Xplore Technologies in a press release.

"No matter if it's the middle of the desert or in freezing rain, this tablet is going to excel in extreme conditions, resulting in a longer lifecycle and higher return on investment for our customers," Holleran added.

While the company says it is hopeful that the technology can be further developed in order to become more accessible to a general audience, right now, the company is focusing on maintaining its "rugged" feel and use in the most arduous of situations.

Philip S. Sassower, chairman and chief executive officer for Xplore says that after 15 years of working on similar ideas to be used in danger and high-risk zones, the company plans to maintain its position to "develop the most advanced mobile computing solutions for industries operating in the toughest environments."

It even has a five megapixel camera and can be used for Skype calling as the company aims to make the option more user friendly and multi-purpose.
