A Chinese website, MyDrivers, has posted some leaked images of the chassis of Motorola's third-generation Moto X that shows a cut-out portion assumedly designed for a fingerprint scanner module.
Google has lately announced that Android M would be supporting fingerprint readers out of the box, so it is not farfetched that Motorola is also keeping up with its hardware.
A closer look at the two leaked pictures reveals that there is a square space fitted for a fingerprint identification module just below the camera part of the chassis. It seems like a fingerprint scanner could be embedded inside the Motorola logo at the back of the phone. If the pictures are accurate, Motorola would be initiating a rear-mounted approach to fingerprint scanning. Taking into consideration that Moto X phones no longer feature capacitive or physical keys, the center-rear position of the scanner would be very comfortable for users. No other component parts are present on the photos so that is the only information obtained aside from the main outline of the smartphone.
There are other reports claiming that the image above is of an old engineering sample and the final version of the product would not have the said opening for the fingeprint scanner.
As the anniversary of the launching of Motorola's Moto X 2014 approaches, reports about the specifications of the Moto X 2015 have been coming up. This third generation Moto X is rumored to have two screen size variants, a 5.7-inch Verizon exclusive and a 5.2-inch for all other carriers, and both sporting quad HD displays with 2K resolution.
With model number Motorola XT1542, Moto X 2015 would be powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 4 GB of RAM, equipped with a rear 16-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front shooter.
A Motorola representative claimed that the company plans to improve the camera hardware and would sport advanced manual camera controls for this year's offering for selfies and video chatting. The phone would also feature stereo speakers and the new Type-C USB port and would boot the latest Android Lollipop 5.1.1 out of the box. Motorola would reportedly offer either a 32 GB or a 64 GB internal storage variant and a 3,280mAh battery.
Rick Osterloh, Motorola CEO, has hinted that the Moto X 2015 could be launched as early as September.
Stay tuned for more leaked photos, updates and official announcements for the upcoming Motorola's third generation Moto X 2015.
