OnePlus has posted on the company's official forum that OnePlus 2 will be released with its own operating system, OxygenOS, which is based on the latest Android Lollipop 5.1.
Along with this announcement, OnePlus wrote that OnePlus One owners with OxygenOS, which was initially released last April and based on Android Lollipop 5.0.2, will have to wait longer for the Android Lollipop 5.1 update.
OnePlus explained that with their current small team, they are focusing all their efforts on their upcoming flagship smartphone OnePlus 2 with Android Lollipop 5.1-based OxygenOS. The company has not given any official release date for OnePlus 2, but they assured fans they are picking up pace with the updates.
OnePlus 2 is expected to be launched in the third quarter of this year (July to September), according to previous reports.
Meanwhile, OnePlus also noted in the forum that for OnePlus One owners with Cyanogen OS, the Android Lollipop 5.1-based Cyanogen OS 12.1 is already undergoing factory testing as well as the Google certification process. The rollout of this update is set to be conducted soon.
The company acknowledged the touchscreen issues being experienced on OnePlus One units along with the battery drain and side effects from the initial Android Lollipop 5.0 release.
However, due to the public fallout of the manufacturer OnePlus and its initial software supplier Cyanogen Inc. a couple of months ago, OnePlus One owners were left in a unique position of choosing between Cyanogen OS and homegrown OxygenOS installed on their smartphone. Although both operating systems run on Google's Android, they each offer different enhancements and tweaks.
It seems like the split left the OnePlus team in a bit of a challenge to meet deadlines for updating both Cyanogen OS and OxygenOS for the OnePlus One owners and now also for its upcoming OnePlus 2.
OnePlus owners have been understandably upset. The original marketing for the OnePlus One has pushed its Cyanogen software as one of its most interesting features, which include fast updates to latest versions of Android. With the release of OxygenOS as its first official Lollipop build for the OnePlus One just this April, the company's flagship smartphone has tumbled behind some of its 2014 rivals from HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung.
With the current updates on Cyanogen OS and OxygenOS posted on the official OnePlus website, most of the OnePlus One owners are relieved. The OTA updates for OnePlus One may be released sooner than expected.
