This year's Licensing Expo 2015 is just a few days away, and plenty of major film companies and brands will be on hand, showing off promotional materials for their upcoming projects.
One such project is the Assassin's Creed film, set to star Michael Fassbender. Details on the movie adaptation of Ubisoft's hit video game franchise are scarce, but our first piece of official promo art from the film (via Comicbook.com) gives us a slightly better idea of what to expect.
The poster shows an eagle against an "Animus" style backdrop that is used heavily in the video game series. Below is the film's name, simply titled Assassin's Creed: The Movie at this point, as well as a release date of Dec. 21, 2016.
What exactly the film will be about is still unknown, but it seems like a safe bet to assume the film will draw heavily from the first Assassin's Creed game released in 2007. That game revolved around the present-day character Desmond Miles, who uses a machine known as the Animus to relive the memories of his long-dead ancestors in order to discover the secrets of the past. He quickly finds himself involved in a conspiracy between two ancient orders that have been warring for centuries: the Assassin's and the Templars.
It is speculated Fassbender will be playing Miles and, very likely, one of his ancestors. The film's first piece of promo art definitely invokes the look and feel of the original Assassin's Creed game, so perhaps we can expect the film to take viewers back to the time of the Crusades, as seen in the first game through the eyes of the founder of the modern Assassin order, Altair.
We will likely know more details soon, as Fassbender says the film will start shooting this September. The next installment in the game franchise, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, will be releasing on Oct. 23.
