Ever since he appeared in the original Iron Man film way back in 2008, Samuel L. Jackson's character of Nick Fury has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (or former director) has already made an appearance in seven MCU films.
Unfortunately, Jackson signed on for only nine. In just two more movie appearances, at long last Jackson could be free of the interconnected Marvel film and television universe that seems to grow larger with each passing month.
While some actors might want to escape from such a long-term deal, Jackson is actually looking to renew it. Speaking with Collider about his upcoming film Big Game, Jackson says he doesn't plan on leaving the MCU anytime soon, despite his expiring contract.
"Of course [I'm interested in returning]! I'm looking for a contract extension right now, yeah. I'm looking to re-up," Jackson tells the site.
And why not? It's easy money for Jackson. Most of his appearances have been minor so far, with a few cameos here and there. It was in Avengers that he had his first substantial part to play.
In the interview he also discusses meeting comic writer Mark Millar, the man responsible for creating the Ultimate universe version of Nick Fury that the MCU is drawing inspiration from for Jackson's character. That leads directly into Jackson's role in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, or rather, his lack of one.
"It's really great to be the connective tissue between so many different characters in so many different films, that brings those guys together," Jackson says. "But I'm not in Captain America 3. I can't figure that out, but I'm not. I guess I'm still out there, trying to figure out what happened to S.H.I.E.L.D. and who these other people are."
Fury played his largest role yet in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so his absence from the jam-packed Civil War is curious to say the least. Jackson still has two more Marvel films before his contract expires, however. Chances are those two movies will be the two part Avengers: Infinity War. Even after those films release, expect to see Jackson's Nick Fury for a long time to come.
